EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States
The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
