Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry
The Australian skipper has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an impressive average.
The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming Ashes series.
Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.
Previous updates from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches set to start on the 21st of November in Western Australia.
The selector shared that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the prospects of participating.
"We know that the window is narrowing and various factors around that, aside from the physical problem, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.
"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a major part. Hopefully from the opening match. If not, then we'll pick it up."
Previous Setbacks
The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand recently after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.
He has a history of back injuries, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of several home seasons in a short span.
He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the contest.
The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.
Alternative Arrangements
Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.
The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.
He labeled it as a "small issue and confirmed that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."
"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the initial game as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.
"He was only going to play the starting games in any case. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
